Unleashing leadership potential: A comprehensive leadership development program
Background
This national organisation was experiencing business growth, rapid employee growth and a leadership structure that was becoming more hierarchical compared to a previous flat structure. The business owners were taking a step back from day-to-day operations and people management to focus on strategic priorities.
What was the need?
Middle and front-line managers were taking on more responsibility and, with growth, there was a greater need to create consistency across the business and a shared leadership approach.
What we did
- In conjunction with senior leadership, we designed a 6-month leadership program consisting of 5 modules with topics aligned to business objectives and the identified leadership capability gaps that existed
- We took a blended learning approach which included virtual classes, online learning, and self-paced resources such as articles, videos, and podcasts
- The program was designed to create maximum impact whilst minimising the learners time off the job
- Learners completed a leadership self-assessment, in conjunction with their manager, to establish their specific development needs and to enhance their self-awareness
- Each learner received an individual development plan based on their specific development needs
- The internal leadership development program was complemented with external courses
- Feedback was gathered from participants after each module and adjustments were made on-the-go as appropriate
- After a successful first cohort in 2020/21, another program was delivered to a second cohort in 2021/22
Result
The business found that there was increased collaboration amongst the leaders which helped to break down silos and improve the sharing of information, resources and ideas. Managers had increased confidence and capability to lead their teams.
